How are domestic layover flights assigned to a pilot? What is the average number of layovers that are assigned to a pilot?

The system automatically assigns domestic layovers to pilots. The auto roster assigns domestic layovers on the basis of bids received, rotational seniority, crew pairings, and crew availability. It is worth noting that as per company policy both Captains and Co-pilots are allotted their requested home base in a time-bound manner. Needless to say, this does result in overstaffing of pilots in certain bases and shortage in others. To manage this disparity of crew strength in various bases, while retaining acceptable levels of productivity and maintaining operational stability, crew pairings are created with layovers. The following are some of the guidelines for domestic layovers: •    Domestic layovers are a function of commercial schedule, crew availability at the base, and productivity targets. •    The number of layovers offered in each base varies based on changes to any of the above factors. •    The system first assigns layovers to pilots who have bid for layovers. The remaining layovers are then assigned to pilots who appear most suited for those flights keeping in mind roster stability, optimum utilization and coverage of all flights.
