Why do reserve / Standby (SBY) duty get created in a roster? What are the possible scenarios which affect roster stability of a pilot?
SBY duties are an integral part of roster building. The functionality of SBY duties is explained below:
SBY assignments are created in the roster for maintaining the punctuality of operations in case of non-availability of assigned crew.
At times, more than one day of SBY are planned with an intention of maintaining roster stability and cover for non-availability of assigned crew for multi day patterns without creating a domino effect on other pilots’ rosters.
Hence, apart from providing operational integrity, the SBY’s in the system protect the stability of the other crews’ rosters.
Multiple factors destabilize the roster, some are predictable and some are not. We are constantly finding ways to improve the roster stability. Some of the events that affect stability of roster are as follows:
Training/ License renewal process
Casual Leave (CL) / Sick Leave (SL) / Emergency Leave
Airport Entry Pass (AEP) renewal process
Flight Diversion
Flight Duty Time Limitation (Flight Delay due to unforeseen circumstances including weather)
Not Available to fly as per Ops (NAO)
Temporary Medical Unfit (TMU)
